Privacy policy

Who we are

The Salvage Register is an independent directory of antique, vintage and second-hand shops in Nova Scotia, Canada, owned and operated by Nikita VanVessem, who is the data controller for the personal information described here. Questions about this policy or your information can be sent through the contact form linked at the bottom of the register.

What we collect

  • Account details: your email address, your chosen display name, and — if you sign in with Google — the basic profile information Google returns.
  • Things you post: star ratings, reviews, shop photos, yard and estate sale listings, and shop suggestions.
  • Membership status: your plan, its status and renewal date. We never see or store your card number.
  • Basic technical logs: standard server logs used to keep the site running and secure.

Where it is stored

All account data, reviews, photos and listings are held in a managed PostgreSQL database and private storage hosted in Canada, in the Montréal (AWS ca-central-1) region. Data is encrypted in transit over HTTPS and encrypted at rest. Access is restricted by row-level security so your account can only reach your own records.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your information and we do not run advertising. We use a small number of service providers strictly to operate the site: Supabase (database, authentication and file storage, Canadian region), Paddle (our merchant of record, which processes payments and handles sales tax and invoicing), and Google (only if you choose Google sign-in). Each receives only what it needs to do its job. We also disclose information where Canadian law requires it.

Public content

Your display name appears beside any review or photo you post, and beside any sale you put on the community board, where other members can see it. Your email address is never shown publicly. Don't upload photos containing anything you wouldn't want other members to see.

Cookies

We use only what the site needs to function: a session cookie and local browser storage to keep you signed in, and the payment provider's checkout cookies. There are no advertising or third-party tracking cookies.

How long we keep it

Account data is kept while your account exists. Reviews, photos and listings are kept until you delete them or delete your account. Expired sale listings drop off the community board automatically. Billing records are retained by our payment provider as long as tax law requires.

Your rights

Under PIPEDA and Nova Scotia privacy law you may request a copy of your information, ask for corrections, or ask us to delete your account and everything attached to it. You can delete your own reviews and photos at any time from within the app, and cancel your membership yourself from the Membership link. Deletion requests are actioned within 30 days.

Children

This site is not intended for anyone under 16, and we don't knowingly collect information from children.

Changes

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, the date at the top changes and members are told before it takes effect. See also our terms and refund policy.
